Thanks for the very detailed and thoughtful answer. I believe I was overthinking things. Over the weekend it occurred to me that the users could simply edit their system-generated contact or an article they have access to.
In the end I set it so that each map marker has very basic information and a link to a user-specific page. It was much easier than I thought.
